Lammas: Honoring the First Harvest

A sacred celebration of abundance, reflection, and continued growth

What Is Lammas (Lughnasadh)? 🌾

Lammas

Lammas — also called Lughnasadh (pronounced LOO-nah-sah) — marks the beginning of harvest season. Celebrated around August 1, this sacred seasonal holiday is one of the eight spokes on the Wheel of the Year, falling at the midway point between the Summer Solstice and the Autumn Equinox.

Lammas is a time to pause, give thanks, and reflect. It invites us to honor the first fruits of the season — and the personal growth we’ve cultivated within ourselves.

In ancient times, Lammas was celebrated as the first grain harvest, when communities gave thanks for the bread that would sustain them through winter. In fact, the word Lammas comes from the Old English hlaf-mæsse — “loaf mass.”

And today, it’s a moment to reflect on your own personal harvest: the intentions you’ve nurtured since spring, the ways you’ve grown, and the fruits that are beginning to ripen in your life.

The Energy of the Season: What We’re Celebrating 🍓☀️

At Lammas, we celebrate:

  • The first harvest of summer, and the abundance beginning to emerge
  • The hard work we’ve invested — in our gardens and our growth — since the Winter Solstice
  • The promise of what’s still to come, and the inner strength to keep tending our dreams

Think back to the seeds you planted earlier this year — literally and spiritually. What’s ripening now? What signs of progress or abundance are beginning to appear?

Even if you don’t feel “finished” or fully in bloom, take a sacred pause. Lammas reminds us that celebrating what’s growing is just as important as the final harvest

Rituals for Honoring the First Harvest 🌾🕯

To align with the sacred energy of Lammas, try one (or more!) of these simple rituals:

8 Ways to Celebrate Lughnasa, Lughnasadh or Lammas

1. Hold a Personal Harvest Ritual

Light a candle. Take a few deep breaths. Reflect on what you’ve been growing — both outwardly and within. Speak your gratitude aloud. Then whisper a prayer of strength for what is still to come.

2. Bake Bread

Honor your ancestors — and the sacred grain — by baking a simple loaf. As you knead the dough, reflect on all the hands that helped bring this nourishment into being.

3. Visit a Farmer’s Market

Connect directly with the local harvest. Buy something fresh. Cook it slowly. Eat mindfully. This act becomes a ritual in itself.
